The largest district by area

Porz lies on the right bank in the south-east of the city. At the end of 2025 it had around 117,500 residents across 78.78 square kilometres, making it Cologne's largest district by area. It has belonged to the city since 1 January 1975; before that, Porz am Rhein was an independent town. It covers the neighbourhoods Eil, Elsdorf, Ensen, Finkenberg, Gremberghoven, Grengel, Langel, Libur, Lind, Poll, Porz, Urbach, Wahn, Wahnheide, Westhoven and Zündorf. Poll is the only long-established Cologne neighbourhood in the district, having belonged to the city since 1888.

Large area, long distances

Because Porz is so large, many kilometres can lie between two points in the district. Always tell us the neighbourhood: Zündorf, Langel and Libur lie by the Rhine in the south, Wahn and Lind in the east, Poll in the north. The Wahner Heide, a large nature reserve, lies in the east of the district. If your vehicle breaks down there in a forest car park or on a side road, there are often few landmarks. Name a car park, a track, or a village entrance.

The A59, the Porz interchange and the airport

The A59 runs from Cologne to Bonn. After the Cologne-Heumar triangle come the Rath exit (32), the Cologne-Porz interchange (33), where the A559 joins, the Airport exit (34), Wahn (35) and Lind (36). The A59 also has the Schloss Röttgen petrol station. The A4 and A559 at Poll and Gremberghoven

Past the Rodenkirchen bridge, the A4 reaches the Poll neighbourhood, with the Köln-Poll exit (13). Then comes the Cologne-Gremberg interchange, where the A559 branches off to Deutz and the airport. Both spots are important links between the two banks of the Rhine and therefore heavily loaded.

Why names matter: a look at the history

Porz was an independent town on the Rhine until 1975 and was granted town rights in 1951. Its name likely comes from the Latin porta (gate) or portus (harbour), as the river bend once suited a natural harbour. That's why the district still has several distinct centres today: Porz-Zentrum, Wahn, Zündorf and others. Since 2007, Finkenberg has been Cologne's 86th neighbourhood. For you, this means: saying "in Porz" might mean the district, the Porz neighbourhood, or the centre of Porz. Name the neighbourhood and a street, for example Wahn or Zündorf, so a vehicle doesn't end up at the wrong end of the district.
