Nine neighbourhoods in the east

District 8 consists of the neighbourhoods Brück, Höhenberg, Humboldt/Gremberg, Kalk, Merheim, Neubrück, Ostheim, Rath/Heumar and Vingst. It was formed on 1 January 1975 and is named after its most populous neighbourhood. It borders Mülheim to the north, Bergisch Gladbach and Rösrath to the east, Porz to the south, and the city centre (via Deutz) to the west. The district town hall was built in 1992 by architect Gottfried Böhm, and the Kalk Karree shopping centre opened in 2003.

Industrial history and dense streets

Kalk was an industrial site. The Chemische Fabrik Kalk has roots in an ammonia plant in Nippes, and the neighbourhoods around Kalker Hauptstraße remain densely built to this day, with commercial land, former factory sites and residential streets packed close together. For you that means: breaking down on a side street here often puts you between delivery traffic and parked cars. Describe the street and house number, so a vehicle can find you precisely.

The A3, A4 and A59: Kalk's motorway hub

Several motorways converge at Kalk's edge: at the Cologne-Heumar triangle, the A3, A4 and A59 meet; at the Cologne-Ost interchange (16), the A3, A4 and B55a. Between the two lies the stretch that a 2015 count found to be the busiest motorway section in Germany. The Rath exit (32) of the A59 is in Rath/Heumar. On the A4, past Köln-Ost comes the Köln-Merheim exit (17), then Bergisch Gladbach-Refrath (18). If you break down here, follow the safety steps immediately and tell us the exit. Merheim, Brück and the Königsforst

East of Köln-Ost, the A4 passes Merheim and Brück and through the northern part of the Königsforst forest. There the motorway narrows to five lanes, then four from Refrath onward, meaning less room for manoeuvring. The Lustheide and Röttgesberg rest areas serve as landmarks on the A4.

Landmarks in Kalk

The district town hall by Gottfried Böhm, opened in 1992, and the Kalk Karree from 2003 with mostly municipal offices, are well-known landmarks in the Kalk neighbourhood. Deutz, which borders directly across the river, belongs to the city-centre district, not Kalk. For your location, that means: you're in Kalk if you're on Kalker Hauptstraße or in the Vingst, Höhenberg or Ostheim neighbourhoods, and in Deutz if you're near the trade fair, the station, or the Rhine.
