What belongs to the Nippes district

District 5 lies on the left bank of the Rhine north of central Cologne and covers the neighbourhoods Bilderstöckchen, Longerich, Mauenheim, Niehl, Nippes, Riehl and Weidenpesch. It was formed on 1 January 1975 as part of the municipal reorganisation and is named after its most populous neighbourhood. To the south it borders Neustadt-Nord, to the west Neuehrenfeld, and to the east lies the Rhine.

Neusser Straße and the neighbourhood

At the centre of the Nippes neighbourhood is Neusser Straße with many shops. Around it are two areas with their own history: the Eisenbahn-Quartier, also called the Sechzigviertel, which grew out of a former railway repair works' housing estate and is now partly car-free, and the Clouth Quartier on the site of the former Clouth rubber works, where a new residential area has been developing since 2013. Both areas have narrow streets, traffic-calmed zones and lots of parked cars. A tow truck needs room to manoeuvre there, so tell us how tight it is at your spot.

Niehl, Riehl and the Rhine

Niehl lies in the north on the Rhine, and Riehl is home to Cologne Zoo. Niehler Straße, formerly the Niehler Weg, is considered the oldest street in Nippes and was likely already a Roman through-route. The Köln-Niehl exit (100) of the A1 gives direct motorway access, beyond which lies the Cologne-Nord interchange, where the A1 and A57 meet. Tram line to the north

Tram line 15 runs from Ubierring through Nippes, Weidenpesch and Longerich to Chorweiler. On the approach roads to these stops, cars are often parked in a second row. If your vehicle is blocking a stop or a tram lane, please tell us right away and also inform the transit operator.

Longerich and Weidenpesch: close to the motorway in the north

In the north of the district lie Longerich and Weidenpesch. The Köln-Longerich exit (28) of the A57 gives motorway access, and tram line 15 connects both neighbourhoods with Nippes and Chorweiler. In a breakdown there, the exit is the best landmark: tell us whether you're before or past it, and whether you're heading towards the city centre or towards the Cologne-Nord interchange.
