Nine neighbourhoods between the Rhine and the Bergisches Land

District 9 covers Buchforst, Buchheim, Dellbrück, Dünnwald, Flittard, Höhenhaus, Holweide, Mülheim and Stammheim. It borders Leverkusen to the north, Bergisch Gladbach to the east, the Kalk and city-centre districts to the south, and the Rhine forms the border with the Nippes district to the west. The northern neighbourhoods, Flittard and Stammheim, lie by the Rhine near the city boundary; Dellbrück and Holweide are further east towards Bergisch Gladbach.

The Mülheim bridge

Today's Mülheim bridge opened in 1951 and is the third bridge on this spot. The first was a pontoon bridge opened in 1888, followed in 1929 by a suspension bridge destroyed in the Second World War. It connects Mülheim with the left bank of the Rhine, specifically Nippes. Breaking down on the bridge blocks a key link. Tell us which side you're on and which direction you were heading.

The A3 with three interchanges

The A3 serves the district with the Köln-Mülheim (25, B51) and Köln-Dellbrück (26, B506) exits, preceded by Leverkusen-Zentrum (24). Between Leverkusen and Köln-Mülheim, the A3 was widened to eight lanes in June 2017. These sections carry heavy traffic, see Breakdown on the A3 near Cologne. If you break down there, tell us the exit, the direction, and whether you're on the carriageway or the hard shoulder.

Tram lines to the east

Tram lines 3 and 4 connect Holweide, Dellbrück and Höhenhaus with Mülheim and the city centre. There's little room at stops on the approach roads. If your vehicle is blocking tracks or a stop, tell us right away and inform the transit operator.

Mülheim on the Rhine, not the Ruhr

Mülheim was an independent town on the Rhine with its own mayor until 1914, when it was incorporated into Cologne. Because there's also a Mülheim an der Ruhr, it helps to say "Köln-Mülheim". The neighbourhood was heavily bombed on 28 October 1944 during the Second World War, destroying large churches, the rail line between Mülheim and Kalk, and much else. That explains why the streetscape combines different eras: old churches next to post-war buildings and densely built streets with limited room to manoeuvre.

• Name the neighbourhood: Mülheim, Buchheim, Buchforst, Dellbrück, Holweide, Höhenhaus, Dünnwald, Flittard or Stammheim.
• At the Mülheim bridge: your direction of travel and which side of the Rhine.
• On the A3: exit 25 or 26, towards Frankfurt or towards Oberhausen.
• At the city boundary: whether you're still in Cologne or already in Leverkusen.
