Statistical districts and place names

The division into statistical districts barely matters day to day; people orient by the traditional names of places instead. For your location too, the familiar place name counts for more than the district number: Fischbach, Tennenlohe, Doos, Langwasser or Gostenhof are names every driver knows.

The Nuremberg interchange: A9 and A3

Near Lauf, the route crosses the Pegnitz, then comes the Nuremberg interchange with the A3. There, the A9's main carriageway coming from the north joins the A3, which from this point forms the A9's route heading south. At the interchange, the A9 has only four lanes. It then runs through the Lorenzer Reichswald; in Nürnberg-Fischbach there's a connection to the city centre. At the Nuremberg-Ost interchange it crosses the A6; near Feucht the Nuremberg–Ingolstadt high-speed rail line meets the motorway, and the A73 joins at the Nuremberg/Feucht triangle. The A73 and the Frankenschnellweg

The A73 is 167 kilometres long, running from Suhl via Coburg, Bamberg and Nuremberg to Feucht. The section between Bamberg and Nuremberg mostly came from reclassifying the motorway-standard B4, and is called the Frankenschnellweg. Within Nuremberg's city area there's a gap with three traffic-light-controlled junctions; this stretch is designated as the county road N4. That means: on the way through the city, motorway and city street alternate, and you can suddenly find yourself at a traffic light instead of an exit. Tell us the junction or the district.

The A3 near Erlangen and Fürth

North of Nuremberg, the A3 passes the western suburbs of Erlangen. In the Frauenaurach district it crosses the Mittlere Aurach, the Main-Danube canal and the Regnitz in quick succession. Right after that, the A3 crosses the A73, called the Frankenschnellweg here, at the Fürth/Erlangen interchange. Waiting safely in Nuremberg

On the A3, A6, A9 or A73: hazard lights on, everyone behind the crash barrier, set up a warning triangle if it's safe to do so. On the Frankenschnellweg, motorway and city street alternate, so you could be at a traffic light: hazard lights on and, if possible, pull to the side of the road. At the Nuremberg interchange, where the A9 and A3 share a route, extra caution is needed since two motorways converge.

Where it often happens in Nuremberg

At the Nuremberg interchange, the A9 has only four lanes, so traffic is denser than on the open route. On the Frankenschnellweg's gap with its three traffic lights, rear-end collisions are more common, since drivers don't expect a stop on an otherwise junction-free route. In the Lorenzer Reichswald, deer crossing occasionally causes sudden braking.
