25 boroughs, but neighbourhoods in everyday life

Munich is divided into 25 boroughs, but day to day, locals refer to neighbourhoods and districts like Schwabing, Sendling or Haidhausen rather than a borough number. For your location, that means: tell us the neighbourhood, the street, and a U-Bahn or S-Bahn station. The borough number alone rarely helps.

The Mittlerer Ring

The Mittlerer Ring, officially the B 2 R, is about 29 kilometres long and runs entirely within the city. It's the backbone of Munich's road traffic and the fastest link to the city's main routes. Of the motorways leading into Munich, the A8 towards Salzburg, the A9 towards Nuremberg and Berlin, and the A96 towards Lindau connect directly to the ring; the A94 towards Passau reaches it via a short stretch of Einsteinstraße, and the A95 towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen via the B2. The A8 towards Stuttgart has a roughly seven-kilometre link via Verdi- and Arnulfstraße. In a breakdown on the ring, tell us your direction of travel, a tunnel or junction, for example the Richard-Strauss-Tunnel, and the nearest exit.

The A99 motorway ring

Further out, the A99, Munich's motorway ring, connects several motorways a few kilometres outside the city and lets through-traffic bypass it. It runs from the A96 in the south-west via the A8 in the north-west and the A92 to the A9 in the north, continuing to the A94 in the east and the A8 and A995 in the south. The ring still isn't fully closed today, which explains why drivers on Munich's outskirts easily get lost. If you're at an interchange or triangle on the A99, tell us its name, for example the Munich-West interchange, Munich-Nord, or the Feldmoching triangle.

The A9 ends in Schwabing

The A9, which connects Berlin and Munich, ends at the München-Schwabing exit (76) and continues from there into the Mittlerer Ring and the city street network. If you break down here, tell us your direction of travel and the exit.

Munich's low-emission zone

Munich has a low-emission zone requiring a green sticker. As far as we know, it lies within the Mittlerer Ring, and since 1 February 2023 includes the ring itself, with an exception around the Brudermühlbrücke up to the B11. The exact boundary, and what applies to your vehicle, should be checked with the city of Munich; we make no guarantees about it. If your destination is in the zone, it helps to tell us which sticker your vehicle has.

Waiting safely in Munich

On the Mittlerer Ring or the approach motorways: hazard lights on, everyone behind the crash barrier, set up a warning triangle if it's safe to do so. In a tunnel like the Richard-Strauss-Tunnel: don't turn around or reverse, drive to the next emergency bay if you can, otherwise hazard lights on and raise the alarm via the emergency phone or 112. In a car park, hazard lights are usually enough, and if you're blocking a ramp, briefly warn other drivers.

Where it often happens in Munich

On the Mittlerer Ring, traffic is dense because of the many merges and exits, and it often brakes abruptly before tunnels. On the incomplete A99 motorway ring, unfamiliar drivers easily get lost where the ring is interrupted. Where the A9 transitions into the Mittlerer Ring near Schwabing, the road switches from motorway to city-street level, and traffic frequently slows there.
