Boroughs, localities and districts

Leipzig is administratively divided into ten boroughs containing 63 localities. Districts, by contrast, are areas formed by the incorporation of previously independent villages, so district and locality boundaries don't always match. Three rings around the city centre

Leipzig's Mittlerer Ring is meant to carry federal-road traffic between the outer districts, sitting between the outer motorway ring (the Mitteldeutsche Schleife) and, further in, the Tangentenviereck and the city-centre ring. It's only partly finished: in the north, only part of the full route between Gohlis (Landsberger Straße) and Wahren (Pittlerstraße) is built, and in the south a larger gap remains between Stötteritz and Knautkleeberg. The A14 and northern Leipzig

The A14 runs through northern Leipzig. At the Parthenaue triangle it connects with the A38, offering an alternative route towards Erfurt, Munich and Dresden meant to relieve the A14 through northern Leipzig. If you break down there, tell us the motorway, direction, and exit or triangle.

The A38 as a southern bypass

The A38, the Südharzautobahn, branches off the A7 south of Göttingen and runs via Heiligenstadt, Nordhausen and Sangerhausen to Leipzig. Between the Rippachtal interchange and the Parthenaue triangle it forms Leipzig's southern bypass, also called the Südtangente. When describing your location, the name of the junction helps.

The trade fair and lignite lakes

Around Leipzig, several lakes have formed from flooded former lignite open-pit mines. Car parks by the lakes and at the trade-fair grounds often have no house number. Tell us the name of the car park, the lake, or the hall instead.

Waiting safely in Leipzig

On the A14 or A38: hazard lights on, everyone behind the crash barrier, set up a warning triangle if it's safe to do so. On the Mittlerer Ring, where roads can end abruptly or turn into a city street: hazard lights on and, if possible, pull onto a hard shoulder or car park. By a lake or at the trade-fair grounds: hazard lights on and move the vehicle as far from the carriageway as possible.

Where it often happens in Leipzig

On the incomplete Mittlerer Ring, unfamiliar drivers easily get lost where a road ends. At the Parthenaue triangle, where the A14 and A38 meet, traffic is denser because of lane changes. At car parks with no address around the lakes and the trade-fair grounds, pinpointing the exact location takes longer, so a WhatsApp location helps especially here.
