Münster in Westphalia sits on the Münstersche Aa river between the Ruhr area and Osnabrück, and is one of Germany's larger university towns. For a breakdown, that means: around the university and city centre, vehicles are parked close together.

Six boroughs

The city is divided into six boroughs: Mitte, Nord, Ost, West, Süd-Ost, and Hiltrup. The official names sometimes differ from everyday usage. Tell us the district you're in, for example Hiltrup, Coerde or Amelsbüren.

Canals, the city harbour, and the Aasee

The Dortmund-Ems canal and the historic Max-Clemens canal run through the city. The Dortmund-Ems canal passes through Amelsbüren, Hiltrup, the harbour area, Coerde and Gelmer, among others. The Aasee is a reservoir lake south-west of the city centre, lined with parks, promenades, and the Allwetterzoo. If you break down by a canal or the lake, tell us the nearest car park or bridge.

The A1: the "Hansalinie" through the west

The A1 runs north-south through the city. Known here as the "Hansalinie", it curves in a wide arc through the west of the city, physically separating some districts. After its second crossing of the Dortmund-Ems canal near Münster-Amelsbüren, the six-lane section ends, and the A1 becomes four lanes, running through the forested Davert towards Ascheberg and Hamm. The A43, B219 and B51

The A43, coming from Wuppertal via Bochum and Recklinghausen, passes under the A1 at the Münster-Süd interchange and becomes the B219 and B51 a few kilometres further on. The B219 runs north through the city towards Greven and Ibbenbüren. The B51 curves widely north-east as a bypass around Münster via Georgsmarienhütte, Osnabrück and Diepholz to Bremen. Waiting safely in Münster

On the A1 or A43: hazard lights on, everyone behind the crash barrier, set up a warning triangle if it's safe to do so. By a canal or the Aasee: hazard lights on and move the vehicle as far from the carriageway as possible, not right at the water's edge. In the university district with narrow access roads: hazard lights on and, if possible, keep cycle paths clear.

Where it often happens in Münster

At the Münster-Süd interchange, where the A1 and A43 meet, traffic is denser because of lane changes. Around the university and city centre, dense buildings and many cyclists make it more confusing than elsewhere. At the canal bridges, the carriageway is often narrower than on the open road.
