Twelve boroughs around the city centre

Dortmund is divided into twelve boroughs: the three city-centre boroughs West, Nord and Ost, and a ring of nine further boroughs, clockwise from the north: Eving, Scharnhorst, Brackel, Aplerbeck, Hörde, Hombruch, Lütgendortmund, Huckarde and Mengede. The borough alone rarely helps with your location. Tell us the district and street, for example Wickede, Kirchlinde or Hombruch.

The A40: Ruhrschnellweg and traffic-jam champion

The A40 runs almost exactly west to east through Duisburg, Mülheim, Essen and Bochum to Dortmund. This stretch is called the Ruhrschnellweg. Several sections carry over 100,000 vehicles a day, and the stretch between Essen and Dortmund is especially prone to jams. For you, that means: if you break down here, expect slow-moving traffic, and a driver needs time to reach you. We don't give a fixed arrival time because of this.

The Westfalendamm in the city

In Dortmund, the B1 runs as a city street via the Rheinlanddamm and Westfalendamm, one of the city's most important main roads. The Westfalendamm lies in the Innenstadt-Ost borough. Tram line U47 runs along its central reservation, above ground, for almost the entire stretch built as a city street. If your vehicle breaks down there, don't push it onto the tram tracks in the central reservation. Tell us the street, your direction of travel, and the nearest stop.

The A45, A2 and the motorway ring

The A45 starts at the Dortmund-Nordwest interchange, where it connects to the A2. The junction is still designed so the A45 could later be extended north to Olfen. Further south it reaches the A1 at the Westhofen interchange near Schwerte, leaving Dortmund's motorway ring behind. From the Dortmund-Nordwest interchange, the A2 forms the northern part of the ring. The A2 also has exit 14, originally built only as access to the landfill site in Dortmund-Lanstrop. Airport and port

Dortmund has an airport in the east of the city and a large canal port. In a breakdown in the port area, the same applies as on other company premises: tell us the street, gate or quay, so a vehicle finds the right access.

Waiting safely in Dortmund

On the A40, A45 or A2: hazard lights on, everyone behind the crash barrier, set up a warning triangle if it's safe to do so. On the Westfalendamm: don't push the vehicle onto the tram tracks, hazard lights on, wait on the hard shoulder or the edge of the carriageway. In the port or airport area, hazard lights are usually enough, and briefly warn others if you're blocking an access road.

Where it often happens in Dortmund

Between Essen and Dortmund, the A40 is especially prone to jams, with more frequent rear-end collisions when traffic suddenly stops. At the Dortmund-Nordwest interchange, where the A45 and A2 meet, traffic is denser because of lane changes. On the Westfalendamm, traffic lights before tram stops often cause slow-moving traffic.

• On the Westfalendamm: direction of travel and whether you're on the carriageway or next to the tram tracks.
