Between the Rhine and the Neckar

Mannheim sits at the tri-state corner of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse, separated from its sister city Ludwigshafen am Rhein by the Rhine, with which it forms one continuous urban area. The grid squares

The city centre has no ordinary street network but a grid pattern of building blocks instead of streets. These blocks are called "Quadrate" (squares) and are labelled with letters and numbers, for example "C 4". The A6 and A61: the ring around Mannheim and Ludwigshafen

At the Frankenthal interchange, the A61 crosses, which together with the A6 forms a motorway ring around Mannheim and Ludwigshafen. Past Frankenthal, the Ludwigshafen-Nord exit connects to the B9, which also serves BASF's main site. The A6 crosses the Rhine on the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke, which has a footpath for pedestrians in the central reservation. On the right bank, the A6 crosses into Baden-Württemberg and runs past the northern districts straight to the Viernheim triangle, where the A67 ends. Just before the triangle it briefly crosses into Hesse. Along the eastern edge it crosses the Neckar, and at the Mannheim interchange the A656 follows as a second east-west link. The A656 and A659: links to the A5

The A656 connects Mannheim with Heidelberg and the A5. The A659 runs from the Weinheim interchange to the Viernheim interchange, serving as an approach road to the Bergstraße motorway (A5). Right past the Weinheim interchange there's a tight S-bend, limited to 80 km/h towards Weinheim in wet conditions. For you, that means: breaking down there in rain puts you on a bend where other vehicles need to slow down, so secure the scene especially carefully.

A67: the connection to Darmstadt

The A67 runs from the Mönchhof triangle near Rüsselsheim via Darmstadt to the Viernheim triangle near Mannheim. The A5 runs largely parallel to it. If you break down between the A5 and A67, tell us the motorway and direction, since the two run close together, see Breakdown on the A5.

Waiting safely in Mannheim

On the A6, A61, A656 or A659: hazard lights on, everyone behind the crash barrier. At the Weinheim S-bend on the A659 in wet weather: set up the warning triangle far enough before the bend so other drivers get enough warning. On the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke: keep driving to the next exit if the vehicle still allows it, rather than stopping on the bridge itself.

Where it often happens in Mannheim

At the Frankenthal interchange and the Viernheim triangle, several converging motorways make traffic denser. The Weinheim S-bend on the A659 is a known spot for skids in wet weather. In the city centre's grid squares, it's tight and confusing when a vehicle breaks down there.
