46 districts, 16 boroughs

For statistical purposes, the city is divided into 46 districts. By name there are only 43, since the populous districts of Nordend, Sachsenhausen and Westend are each split into East/West or North/South. In everyday life, Frankfurt residents identify more with their district than with one of the 16 larger boroughs. So tell us the district, for example Bockenheim, Niederrad or Rödelheim, plus the street.

The Frankfurt interchange

South-west of the city, right next to the airport, lies the Frankfurter Kreuz, a heavily used clover-leaf motorway interchange where the A5 and A3 meet, along with the B43. The A5 has ten lanes here, and the high-speed rail tunnel for the Cologne–Rhine/Main line runs underneath the interchange. For your location, that means: tell us whether you're in the interchange, before it, or past it, and on which of the two motorways. The clover-leaf's loops all look similar from inside the vehicle, so your direction of travel is decisive.

The ring around the city: A5, A661 and A3

The A661, together with the A5 and A3, forms a motorway ring around Frankfurt. It runs from Oberursel via Bad Homburg, Frankfurt and Offenbach to Egelsbach. Its name Osttangente describes the eastern section; in the north it's called Taunusschnellweg or Feldbergzubringer. The eastern section remains only a provisional build to this day. In a breakdown there, the exit and direction of travel are the most useful details.

The A648 and the trade fair

The A648, also called the Messeautobahn, serves as an approach road from the A66 and A5 into the city centre and ends just short of the Messe Frankfurt trade-fair grounds. It starts at the Eschborn triangle, runs via the Frankfurt-Rödelheim exit to the Westkreuz Frankfurt, where it crosses the A5. If you break down during a trade fair, expect heavy traffic on the approach roads and tell us your direction.

The A66 and the Rhein-Main-Schnellweg

The A66 runs from Wiesbaden via Frankfurt and Hanau to Fulda. The Wiesbaden–Frankfurt section is called the Rhein-Main-Schnellweg, and further east it's the Kinzigtalautobahn. Near Wiesbaden, bridge works can cause closures; check current diversions via traffic radio. In a breakdown, tell us your direction of travel and the section.

Waiting safely in Frankfurt

At the Frankfurter Kreuz or on the A5, A661, A648 and A66: hazard lights on, everyone behind the crash barrier, set up a warning triangle if it's safe to do so. In the tunnel under the Frankfurter Kreuz or in an underground garage at the airport: don't turn around or reverse, drive to the next emergency bay or a free parking space if you can, otherwise hazard lights on and raise the alarm via the emergency phone or 112.

Where it often happens in Frankfurt

At the Frankfurter Kreuz, the clover-leaf layout creates tight curve radii, where traffic often brakes abruptly. On the A661's eastern section, the provisional layout regularly causes tailbacks. During trade-fair events, the A648 approach to the Messe is heavily used; expect slow-moving traffic there.
