The expressway concept

Through-traffic in Hanover is routed around the city centre on expressways, including the Westschnellweg, Südschnellweg and Messeschnellweg. For you, that means: if you're on an expressway, you're on a motor road where specific rules apply, and you should tell us its name.

The Südschnellweg

The Südschnellweg is a mostly four-lane motor road about 12 kilometres long. It begins in the Ricklingen district and runs via Döhren, Seelhorst, Bemerode and Kirchrode to Anderten, the only high-capacity link road crossing the flood-prone Leine lowlands south of Hanover. At the Landwehrkreisel roundabout in Ricklingen, the B6, B65 and B3 federal roads converge. If you break down there, tell us the roundabout and your direction.

The Messeschnellweg and the A37

The Messeschnellweg is a four-lane motor road connecting the two sections of the A37. It starts in the north in the Groß-Buchholz district at the Hannover-Misburg exit, runs east of the city centre through the Eilenriede forest, passes the trade-fair grounds in the Mittelfeld district, and ends in Laatzen-Mitte, where it rejoins the A37 and the B6 branches south. The A37 consists of two sections: the northern one between Burgdorf and Hannover-Misburg is nicknamed the "Moorautobahn" (bog motorway) after the Altwarmbüchener Moor it crosses, and the section from the trade-fair grounds to the Hannover-Süd triangle is called the "Messestutzen". The A352, A2 and A7

At the Hannover-Nord triangle, the A352 branches south-west, a corner link to the A2 that also connects Hanover Airport. It relieves the Hannover-Ost interchange by diverting traffic between north and west, cutting about seven kilometres off the route. On the A2, the split lies right after the Hannover-Herrenhausen exit, directly connecting the Westschnellweg, and so the B6, to the A7 heading north. The Hannover-Nord and Hannover-West triangles only cover part of the possible movements; drivers heading the other way must turn around via the Mellendorf exit on the A7 or the Hannover-Herrenhausen exit on the A2. Waiting safely in Hanover

On the A2, A7, A37 or A352: hazard lights on, everyone behind the crash barrier, set up a warning triangle if it's safe to do so. On an expressway, the same applies, since these are motor roads: don't stay on foot in the carriageway, get behind the crash barrier or onto a hard shoulder. At the trade-fair grounds: hazard lights on, and briefly warn others if you're blocking an access road.

Where it often happens in Hanover

At the Landwehrkreisel, where the B6, B65 and B3 converge, traffic is denser because of the many joining roads. At the transition between the Messeschnellweg and the A37, the road switches between motor road and motorway, causing unfamiliar speed changes. During trade fairs, the approach roads to the trade-fair grounds on the Messeschnellweg are heavily used.
