A city entirely surrounded by Lower Saxony

Bremen is completely enclosed by the state of Lower Saxony. For a breakdown, that means: if you break down on the motorway around Bremen, you're often already in Lower Saxony. The A1 bypasses Bremen to the south, and only a few kilometres actually lie within the free Hanseatic city itself. Between the Hemelingen and Arsten districts it crosses the Weser. The A27 and the Bremen interchange

The A27 runs as an eastern bypass past Bremerhaven and Bremen to the Bremen interchange with the A1. Because it connects to the ports, the A27 carries heavy volumes of freight traffic, including via the Bremen-Vahr, Bremen-Sebaldsbrück, Überseestadt, and Horn-Lehe exits. In a breakdown there, the exit is your most important landmark.

The A281 and the missing link

The A281 in Bremen currently runs for eleven kilometres in two separate sections. Once complete, together with the planned Weser tunnel it's meant to close a ring around Bremen north of the city's own ports and Gröpelingen, connecting the A27 at the Bremen-Industriehäfen triangle via Woltmershausen to the Bremen/Arsten exit of the A1. Closing the gap needs a new Weser tunnel, so the ring remains unclosed for now. Check traffic radio for the current state of the roadworks; we make no statements about it.

Waiting safely in Bremen

On the A1, A27 or A281: hazard lights on, everyone behind the crash barrier, set up a warning triangle if it's safe to do so. Since the A1 and A281 often run close to the border with Lower Saxony here, just tell us the motorway, direction and exit regardless, that's enough for recovery. In the port area, hazard lights are usually enough, and briefly warn others if you're blocking an access road.

Where it often happens in Bremen

At the Bremen interchange, where the A1 and A27 meet, traffic is denser due to heavy freight traffic to the ports. On the incomplete A281, a journey can suddenly switch to an ordinary road since the ring isn't closed yet. In the port areas, access roads are often narrow and heavily used by trucks.
