A565: very heavy traffic

The A565 crosses Bonn from north-east to south-west and is one of the most important routes for commuters and inner-city traffic. Between the Bonn-Lengsdorf exit and the Bonn-Nord interchange, it runs four lanes through densely populated area, in places with no hard shoulder in a cutting or on a bridge. This section carries over 100,000 vehicles a day and is prone to jams. Breaking down there means standing with no hard shoulder. A555: the Cologne-Bonn motorway

The A555 connects Cologne and Bonn and is known as the Cologne-Bonn motorway, one of the oldest motorway routes in Germany. More on this section at Breakdown on the A555.

A59 and A3: the right bank and the east

The A59 connects Cologne with Bonn-Beuel; at the Bonn-Ost interchange it continues as the right-bank Rheinuferstraße (B42), still built to motorway standard as far as Bad Honnef. To the east, the A3 crosses the A560 at the Bonn/Siegburg interchange, more on the A3 at Breakdown on the A3. Waiting safely in Bonn

On the A565, A555, A59 or A3: hazard lights on, everyone behind the crash barrier, set up a warning triangle if it's safe to do so. On the A565 with no hard shoulder: stay belted in the vehicle if possible until traffic is secured, and tell us right away that there's no hard shoulder. On a slope in Bad Godesberg: apply the handbrake and engage a gear, hazard lights on before you get out.

Where it often happens in Bonn

On the A565 between Bonn-Lengsdorf and the Bonn-Nord interchange, heavy use and the missing hard shoulder make it especially accident-prone. At the Bonn-Ost interchange, where the A59 becomes the B42, motorway and federal road switch abruptly. At the Bonn/Siegburg interchange, where the A3 and A560 meet, traffic is denser because of lane changes.
