Wrong Fuel: What Now?

Do this immediately

1. Stop refuelling. As soon as you realise you've used the wrong pump, stop.
2. Don't start the engine or switch on the ignition. If the fuel is in the tank but hasn't reached the fuel line yet, the damage is usually small.
3. Keep the door closed if possible. On many modern vehicles, opening the driver's door already starts the fuel pre-supply pump, which can carry the wrong mixture further.
4. Move the vehicle to a safe spot, for example by rolling or pushing it away from the pump.
5. Call for help: a garage or towing service can take the vehicle somewhere the tank can be pumped out.

If the engine has already run

If you only notice the mistake while driving, for example because the engine stutters or warning lights come on, switch off the engine immediately, coast to a safe spot, and don't drive any further. The longer the wrong fuel mixture runs through the system, the greater the potential damage to the injection system, up to and including the high-pressure pump, injectors and fuel lines.

What happens at the garage

The tank is pumped out and, if needed, flushed. Depending on how far the wrong fuel travelled, the lines and filters are also checked. It's worth telling the garage exactly when you noticed the mistake and whether the engine was running.

Who pays?

The mistake is usually yours. Manufacturers or vehicle insurance generally don't cover a wrongly filled tank. With breakdown cover, part of the cost for towing and pumping out can be reimbursed. Check your policy or call your club before you pay.

Preventing it

• Read the sign on the pump nozzle and the label inside the fuel cap.
• Diesel nozzles are usually thicker and don't fit many petrol cars. That's a clue, but not a guaranteed safeguard.
• If you have a rental vehicle, ask about the fuel type at handover.
• If unsure: don't refuel, ask first.
